Yes, me. I mentioned it on this post, with photos:- http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48297

Unfortunately you can't see them due to photofuket mucking things up! Sad

I will swap the links on the post to my Box account photos, when I get back from my holiday trip.

Here is a photo of the towball adapter, which is welded to the plate the winch is mounted on:- https://app.box.com/s/8vj81nr8h0vzkj10qk2yx3xh2p7878jv.

It allows the winch to swivel and be dismounted, though the combined weight of winch and fittings is quite heavy.

I guess as it is detachable, you wouldn't drive around day -to-day with the winch hanging off your tow bar, and even if you were going mud- plugging, you would probably carry it on-board until you arrived at the venue? So idiots like me would just hit the tow bar! No competition, for most cars.

Carried onboard when offroading until it is actually needed. As I did on the Coniston offroading weekend.  Wink

Driving around with it fitted to the towball, would shortly see it missing from the towbar, along with the towball and wiring loom to the connector. Shocked

Photos in my link about are now updated to my Box account

You could use these two items on your towbar:

Maybe one of these would be useful to get the power from the battery in the front to the winch at the back?:

Those are what I have fitted on mine, as mentioned in the post I linked to above.

Though mine came from a different company.  Wink

These portable winches are worth considering:

£249
N.B. the manual that you can download is scanned out of page order (it starts on page 8 and follows a random order of pages), and several pages are scanned upside down.  However, it does show that the max pull of the winch is 5000lb

It's worth bearing in mind that the rating on the above is a rolling pull, in other words something that is not stuck, and if it's not stuck there would be no need to winch it Smile. TBH that wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
I have a cheap Chinese 10,000lb winch on my discovery with dyneema rope.  I've had it about 7 years and it has had a lot of work from pulling conifers out to pulling my disco and a Nissan patrol at the same time for over 3 hours. Personally I think a winch is very good for self recovery and fitting one to the L400 I'm hoping to get has been on my mind for a while.

yes, good point. For recovery they usually say that a 9500lb winch is fine, so I wonder if this would not be up to the job?
https://www.electricwinchshop.co.uk/winches/superwinch/superwinch-portable-winches/superwinch-winch-2-go-synth.html

It's 4000lb, but could be increased with a snatch block to approaching double this (but half the pull speed, of course).

If you are stuck, or trying to recover someone else who is stuck, and they are in mud but not belly down then it might help, but it is more likely to really struggle.  There are many more aspects to winch recovery other than the rated pull.
Unless you want to get a full size winch then something like a kinetic rope and decent front and rear recovery points would be the way to go

I spoke to Paddy ref this winch (new product) and he will confirm what the 'rated line pull' of it is (the quoted figure of 6800kg is misleading as this is just a 'rolling load')

This winch is 4000lb which is 1.8 tonnes.  However, GOODWINCH recommend that the winch can pull twice the weight of the load so that it will definitely be up to the job, so this winch would not be able to shift a Delica unless it was on level ground, not stuck in v much etc., I think (which isn't much help).  It might be better with a snatch block though.

They also advised that for a 9500lb winch (which is fine for recovery work), the winch would need the larger of their BAK-RAK mounts.

Indeed, it is also influenced by how many turns are on the drum (the more turns, the lower the pull strength) and other factors such as exactly how stuck you are Smile
A vehicle up to its axles in mud will create a "suction" under itself which will require up to 10 times the vehicle weight to break, I have often been involved in winching vehicles stuck in mud that have required three winches at once.
I have also had to self recover using two recovery (snatch) blocks giving four pull lines.  It was very slow but did the job Smile
On a further note the neck of the tow ball is notoriously weak and should NOT be used as a recovery point, better to fit a clevis  hitch (jaw) type.
On the rear of my discovery I have a 2" receiver into which I fit a recovery point, it also takes my NATO hitch for the sankey, but I also have a 6000 lb winch which fits into it with power from a 400amp Anderson connector on the bumper. I use this primarily for loading trailers but I have used it in the past for self recovery.  It is often easier to recover yourself backwards (up your own ruts) than it is to keep going forwards.
I'd like to fit a receiver to my Delica when I get one for similar reasons.

He provided the manual.  Having read it, the winch appears to have a lifting capacity (i.e. max rated line pull) of 3000lbs.  this is nowhere near adequate for our purposes as I have spoken to a couple of winch sellers recently who advised that a good rule of thumb is to go for a winch that is powerful enough to lift the weight of the vehicle (i.e. 2050kg / 4520lb unladen for an L400).
Other people advise that 9500lb (4310kg) is the right power for all Recovery work (as this will still pull out a vehicle stuck in mud/up an incline/stuck in ruts etc.).

I'd say a good 9500lb winch would be best, but, any winch is only as good as the mounting point..
Smaller winches could be used but then you'd need snatch blocks which starts to get complicated  :?
