i have an L400 with 16*8 rims (i think!)

came wiht yokohama geolander ht's (225/70r16) on the back (prob 2/3 worn) and unnamed brand of same size on front (fitted by dealler to replace the tracked out yoko's)

use is mainly on road....so far but we do get snow where i live (and a bit higher up a lot of it to go play in!)

I have noticed a propencity for the back to slide in the rain, and the wife complains of wheel spin in the rain....have to say i have done it too...

now being as the fronts are new and I'm feeling poor I'm after opinions about if changing the backs will make any differencve, and if so to what - i don't mind going wider but i want to maintain a similar rolling diameter....

Apparently the "best" treaded tyres should always be on the rear of the vehicle - if that helps you get started?

As for the wheel spin - stick it in 4 wheel drive? :D

i agree, better for the front to lose grip than the rear, front wheel slide is easier to control that a fishtail down the road Shocked Shocked

4WD works well in the wet Wink

I've always been told it's best to have the best tyres on the front :?

Don't forget this good site for wheel & Tyre comparisons: http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit

Might add that inputing your tyres sizes... It came up with the rim size needed was 6-7" which means your 8"rims are too big Shocked But I would guess that they may be smaller dependant on how or where you measured them Rolling Eyes I believe the measurement is taken between the inside edges of the rim, where the tyre fits... (I'm not a tyre-fitter)

IMHO the optimum size tyres on a 16" rim would probably be a 245/70x16" or better still 255/65x16"s on a otherwise standard Deli. This should avoid arch clearance problems etc.

Standard 225/80x15 tyre is around 29.17 in dia.
or 215/80x15 = 28.54 in dia.

Most common UK replacement = 235/75x15 which is 28.87 in dia.

255/65x16" = 29.05 in dia.

Figures taken from the www.1010 tyre site...

Best tread on the rear or front ?

- I saw a demonstration - sharp corner on wet track
- poor tread on rear made back end flip round before front lost traction.

- with best tread on back the front starts to understear - corrected by either a bit of welly or braking - i.e. at least some control.

Seems to make sense?

This could be an interesting debate... I think I was told that if you have the best tread on the front then, as most panic type braking etc is in a straight line... i.e. when you are about to rear-end someone Embarassed then you need the grip on the front. To be honest, I can see both sides of the coin here. But I keep the best tyres on the front of my company van and as far as my Deli is concerned they are all equally bold Twisted Evil (Joke... I've just put my ATs back on for winter Wink )

I stand corrected Embarassed I've just been off and googled (oh er) and found most evidence says put new tyres on the rear...

Say no more Rolling Eyes

Well having worked for Dunlop & Bridgestone Tyres - on the technical side, not the fitting side, I can catagorically say that part worn tyres have better road adhesion than full tread.( Think F1 intermediates)

For this reason I put the most worn tyres on the front of my vehicles coz I like to have control of the front end of my vehicles.

Having said that my beloved took the Deli to get new front tyres fitted I gave instructions that the wheels be swopped around so the new tyres were on the back and yes they came back fitted to the front, I've not got round to changing them yet but will probably do so on Sunday after the Blackpool Lights Run.

I put adhesion ahead of rolling diameter & wind up etc etc.

Just in case you haven't realised - Were going to Blackpool meet 2morra! :D
