Hi Team...

Has any one got any advice or experience buying a Delica at one of the online auctions in Japan.

If so which auction did you buy from?

I bought mine in 2007 from the Portbury auction in Bristol but that one no longer exists

Dno

You really need a Japanese agent to buy sort out export docs and get your vehicle onto a ship, the Japanese De registration document needs to have translation to send to our dvla. Also to arrange shipping, loading etc.  It felt risky sending money to Japan, but in my case everything went smoothly, it's about 12 yrs since I did it, and I can't trace the company I used, there are different rules depending on the age of vehicle, and uk import taxes to pay. There are a few horror stories of delicas arriving with no oil in them, flat batteries common, and paperwork issues causing problems with registration, because mine was under 10 yrs I had  to put mine through a standard mot and an special inspection where they check everything from speedometer to sharp edges on bash plates, at least I didn't have to pay for a full emissions report, it takes about three months to get your car, I was able to insure mine before it got its number plate so I drove it to mot and enhanced test and retest if fails, but, it's all extra cost if you have to trailer. I saved 4000 to 6000, at the time, but I think the savings are smaller now.

Hopefully someone has done it recently, the Japanese auction inspections are pretty good and so much better than uk auctions.
A few years ago boatloads of delicas were being auctioned in Manchester and Liverpool, but now it's just a trickle, from specialist importers, it would be fun choosing your vehicle while in Japan, good excuse for a holiday.

hi just done a import in jan and about to do another
imported a d5 hated it and sold it
okay things are a little slicker and computerised than they used to be.
https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk

first find your vehicle
i am going to use one of my fave sites because they give a payment protection if you are not happy with the product ali withold payment from the seller
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/MITSUBISHI-Delica-USED-VAN-VEHICLE-1997_332495060.html
the other is the auction network but you will need someone (an agent more in a min about that) to get it to the docks and get the paperwork in order
http://www.japaneseusedcars.com/

right so you found yourself a sweet Deli with all the chrome jaos stuff you are ever going to need.

find an agent, unless your lucky enough to have a japanese speaking family member.
http://www.jsforwarding.co.uk/sea-freight.html
http://jpncars.com/en/importing-a-car-from-japan-to-uk/

a good agent will get the correct export docs and birth certificate for your vehicle, and a receipt for purchase and shipping
usually get your vehicle moved to the dock, and loaded (roll on roll off cheaper but not great i could list loads of things that happen with roro, or container see twice the cost of roro)

right so its on its way travel time about 45 days
This is normal way to import cars into UK.
It is exempt from IVA, if imported car is over 10 years of age. It means you need only MOT and notification regarding paying Import Tax to register the car in UK

and you get home to find a ups pack with all your documents time to talk to hmrc and they will give you a number for nova (notification of vehicle acusition) you are going to pay vat on what you have bought plus 20% on a mysterious extra £600.

do not on under any cercumstances say its a commercial vehical you will be stung for a extra 20% duty on top

they email you a nova form with a receipt then you tell dvla
https://www.gov.uk/dvlaforms
and get eth forms for a second hand vehicle
they come with a pdf which explains how to fill them in dvla will send you 2 numbered copies (they expect you to mess one up)
dvla will send you a v5c
get some plates
get ready for a mot
get ready to pay some road tax

right your container is early its at southamptonyou have a set of keys for your new van.
you can either talk to your shipping agent and they will get it released to a recovery agent
or talk to the port and they will arrange the same

right now for numbers
i imported  MITSUBISHI

Vehicle Price:US$ 6,550
Freight    US$ 1,700 (shipping)
Vanning    US$ 300 (container)
document pack     US$ 15

total in uk £6836.96

somehow there was a discerpancy on the invoice so i only paid £866.53 to hmrc instead of the £1367.392 i was expecting
pates £3.99 from ebay
mot £25
road tax at £265
so parked on the street was a 2010 d5 that i just didn't like for £7996.52

it sold last month so now i can get something i might like

Hey thanks for the very concise explanation

Can I ask what you disliked so much about the D5?..That's the car I was after

My cousin lives in Japan and is married to a Japanese lady so I can get anything translated no problem

I never paid anything to HMRC last time I bought my L400 and it was only 9 yrs old..I got all the necessary documents straight from DVLA

i have 2 L300 and they tow well, act as a 4x4 should and do day van duties when asked.
i think it was more a problem of expectation, i was expecting an L300 but more modern engine and interior
d5 was too soft roader for me, it was faster yes more fuel economy, but its seating position started to hurt my shin, it was closer to a car than a van, way to many buttons and knobs.
the fold down front deasts were neat. and the extra deep glove box to lose stuff in, not sure why there was so many cup and bottle holders, also the weird folding hook in the back of the drivers seat
i guess when compared to the nissan, toyota, mazda or honda it is more 4x4 also towing is 600kg of unbreaked trailer and 1200kg of breaked a drop from my l300s 1500kg breaked capacity.
if you like modern cars you will be plesantly surprised, if you prefer your old tin, like me you will spit and sware and mutter " it nice, but still not as good as my L300"
