Tan Hill - highest pub in England, a great place to meet for off-roading, - the road through to Bowes can be a challenge after it has been washed out by the winter. The Northern Echo / Beamish reliabilty run does it every year in June. Many years ago I did it in my Moggie convertible in glorious summer weather, picking my way carefully so as not to lose my trunnions in a pothole. I was overtaken on the open fell by a Kubelwagen being chased by  a Willys Jeep, complete with gun mount and GI costumed occupants. At easter, camping there in a tent would not be advisable, but  Swaledale or Arkengarthdale could be hospitable enough.
I have found a lovely little campsite in Borrowdale, near Keswick, but nearest  pub is about a mile https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=tablet-android-samsung&hl=en-GB&oe=utf-8&safe=images&q=chapel+house+farm+campsite&source=browser-suggest&qsubts=1487549879855&action=devloc, or there is this little place, right next to the Kings Head pub near Thirlmere, but noisily close to the A591https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=tablet-android-samsung&hl=en-GB&oe=utf-8&safe=images&q=thirlspot+farm&source=browser-suggest&qsubts=1487550108052&action=devloc I visited both today, the Chapel Farm site gets many good reviews, and is only £6 p/p per night.Only allows tents and campervans.Need to find out about green laning in the Lake District, - not sure that the NT are big fans!

There are some approved unmade roads between Little Langdale and Coniston Valley, although currently inaccessible from Little Langdale, due to the ford being washed out. Where in N Yorks are you , C/L?

I always stayed there on my annual summer back-packing tours as a teenager in the '80s. A lovely spot. One year we had to help the farmer round up some cows that had got into the vicars garden next door.

For off road routes, conditions, and legality in the lakes - see this page - searchable via OS maps (Click on map you want to see on LHS then scroll down for pdf for the area, or the condition report ). You can spend hours on this site!!

okay, here is my latest suggestion. We could meet at Tan Hill Inn around 11.00am (or earlier) on Saturday, April 8th. If anyone fancies driving up on the Friday, we could camp at Keld or Askrigg ( Keld is closer to Tan Hill and easier for North Westerners to get to).  After how do's and a spot of lunch, take the trail across to the A66 at Bowes/Gilmonby, and then to the Lake District. Some may prefer to go straight to the Lake District from home.
Here is a dilemma,  Chapel Farm in Borrodale  do not want more than 2 or 3 vans grouped together, so we would need to spread ourselves around their small site ( it is only about 100x100 metres ,  so you would never be far away from others, and they d  like it all quiet by  10. 30, which shouldnt be an issue.) Conniston Hall on the other hand could accommodate us all together, and is generally a bit more bohemian and casual, we could have a firepit or basket, and if a dozen Delis arrived, it wouldn't look like an invasion. Borrodale is more easily accessed from the north/ A66, Conniston from the south/A590. Thirlspot Farm Campsite is easily accessed from north or south, and has a pub next door, but is next to the A591. My personal preference is, by a small margin, Conniston Hall,  which is 100 - 120  mins from Bowes. We could all be there for Saturday evening, to socialise and discuss plans for Sunday, and any other activities or meets etc. COMMENTS PLEASE!

Again I'm happy to go with either. I'll just make sure I'm off.

Sounds like a great plan to me - meet at Tan Hill on the Sat, then I think from what you have outlined my vote is also for Coniston Hall for the Sat/Sunday night.
A plan is coming together! Smile

okay, lets go for that, If anyone is thinking of camping in Swaledale on the Friday night, let me know, I may well join you. Otherwise I'll go straight from here to Tan Hill on the Saturday morning.

It'll be good to see you again, and the L300. Same colours as mine, if I remember right. I'll have to stay sober enough not to stumble into the wrong one Smile !

Andy,
If you like the 'rougher' form of camping, I would recommend for its location, this site at top (Tan Hill end) of Swaledale.
Its only facilities are a tap and a single portaloo, but its alongside the river Swale, and there are plenty of firepits etc.
I stayed here at the back end of last year.
Was only £4 pp.

Can dig out some pics if you like,
Dave

Yes, I know that one , Dave, almost the first sign of civilisation as you come over from 9 Standards Rigg. I would prefer to be closer to the big cities of Keld and Thwaite!

My place is slightly further away from civilization, but there's room for a few Delis outside, and the use of an inside loo/shower etc, for £0 per night (or maybe a pint of the best Old Peculier available for miles around at the Farmer's Arms, Muker, which does decent food too).  If you want a less basic camping experience than Hoggarth's, I'd recommend you try Usha Gap, also by the river, which is within stumbling distance of the aforementioned pub.  If you're thinking of bringing a grommit, bare in mind that the local gamekeepers and farmers see them as sheep-eaters and don't take kindly to them roaming free.

Depending on how many want to camp Friday night in Swaledale, I'll gladly accept a free camping spot for the price of liquid refreshment for my host, at the Farmer's Arms. But if we come in number?, I'm up for camping at Usha Gap, and buying you a pint regardless. So all those who intend to camp in Muker on the Friday night, say Aye! ... Aye!

Now me operation has been put back another couple of weeks  Sad

Cannot see me being well enough to go see places, for a while  Mad
So, please everyone, stop writing about your brilliant places to see, in this subject. 'Cos its making wanna travel.

Sorry Deker...  Sad

As I'll likely be travelling down on the Friday late afternoon / early evening I'll probably overnight somewhere north of Tan Hill and will meet you all at Tan Hill at some point on the Saturday morning?
