Hi Matey
Not had it done on my L400 but i had my old pajero recharged at the main dealers at a cost of £78.00 inc vat, they vaccumed the system ,pressure tested it,applied illuminous dye,and then regassed the system to the correct pressure, and also replaced a leaky fill valve at no extra cost and it worked like a treat.
The paj as it was a 92 vehicle was still using the now illegal R12 gas and mits replaced it with a direct replacement R24 otherwise it means a seal overhaul on the pump to accomodate R134a gas that was used from early 94,My understanding is that all the L400 models from 1994 are now using the R134a gas,but anyone worth there weight will be able to tell by looking at the low/high pressure sides of the aircon unit.Hope that helps ,all the best ,btw if you ask either rustysparks or bill or any of the bournemouth poole lads they could probably reccomend a garage,as i say i had mine done at brighton mitsubishi cheaper than the local aircon place wanted!

in north devon, there is a company called K J Refridgeration that did the job a treat - on my last visit i saw a van with a mobile air con unit on it so it looks like that business has come off a treat, if you are in that area you cannot beat them - i used to know them years and years ago when their business was *really* small - they've done really well for themselves. if they still have the same business principle you cannot go far wrong than to use them!

up here tho, bristol way i am still looking for someone to do mine, preferably mobile, i did ask a guy for a recommendation, but he's on holiday until the 10th may and i wanted it done on the 15th/16th ah well! lol i'll just have to get off me fat arse and look myself lol

£78 sounds about right tho marc Smile was looking to pay about that myself Smile

I know I'm going to be embarrassed by this daft question Embarassed BUT...

How does one know the aircon needs recharging, apart from the air not being cold enough Question

Hi Derek :D
If you open the bonnett and look down to the right hand side as you look in(passenger side)and there should be between the slam panel i think a small round cylindrical thing with pipes going to it,now ontop of this is a small round glass viewing eye, with the aircon running you should be able to see the fluid running through the glass eye with a very small amount of bubbles ,this is working fine ,if however there is a lot of bubbles then the unit needs regassing,if there are absolutely no signs of fluid moving at all then its empty! and wouldn't turn on anyway as its a safety thing, obviously if the temp is warm in your opinion and there is an increase in bubbles then a recharge is in order, hope that helps atb

Hi XP1500, when you get the system recharged I'd be interested to know how much gas they put in. A local garage did mine and were surprised that it only took 720g of r134a, even a Ford Focus takes over 900g. Any one else know how much was put into their system. Mine cost £20 +vat for degassing and £35 - vat for recharging.

:D :D :D Well it's all done and the place was only 2 minutes up the road. Firstly many thanks to Marc for the note about the R134a and 94 vehicles as this helped me get the right answers when asking around.

Derek - I knew I was low on gas because I had checked the sight glass and saw big bubbles in the system whilst it was operating.

I first tried my local Mitsubishi dealer and got a first reply that the imports use the old gas and it would be £150.00 plus the VAT anyway - well I sent them away to rethink their first offer and informed them that the 94 L400 Delica used R134a gas. While waiting for a reply a phoned round and the first people I got through to came up trumps. The company are aircon specialists so I said I was unsure about the gas type, nothing seemed to be a problem and they had answers for every eventuality. The whole job took 40 minutes to do a system check, then top up charge of 495g of gas and add pump lubricant/leakage dye cost me £70.50 inc the VAT

Oh! the main dealer did call while I was out with a quote of £78.00 (don't know if EX or INC VAT)

This company does A lot of Pajero's but the guy had not seem a Delica in there before. I had a good experience and was very satisfied with the work done and so if you are near Poole and you need your aircon recharged go to

AUTO AIRe Limited
Unit 24 Newtown Business Park
Ringwood Road

Having finally worked out what I should be looking at Embarassed there was not even the mearest hint of anything under the sight glass.

Anyway a place just a few miles down the road from me has re-gassed the system for £64.63 incl. VAT.

Wow, the joy of getting the aircon back now the weather's turned :D

(I'll post the company details in the relevant forum)

I've tried to find this sight glass thing to check my air con gas level and I can't seem to find it. From the above posts I should be looking at the right hand side of the vehicle (passenger side) and somewhere in between the intercooler and the right side of the body but there seems to be precious little room there for much other than the twin batteries and what I think is the fuel filter (vertically mounted on the body). Can someone please give me a bit more info on where exactly this sight glass is.

I know I have actually got aircon fitted as the switches are on the dash and in the rear seat with the controls etc and the air is actually a marked bit cooler when it is switched on etc.

Does anyone know if the aircon is actually two separate units ie one for the front and one for the rear cabin etc and are these linked at all or do they need charging with gas seperately etc.

HI matey the aircon is one unit seperated by a control panel in the rear that runs from its own cooler but they all run from the same source ie the same aircon pump and use the same gas so when being re gassed both are done at the same time if you see what i mean but the company doing it should be aware of how it works if you tell them its a dual system, :D

The sight glass isn't where your looking :D if you lift the bonnett and look at the slam panel ie where the bonnett locks onto when closed ,stand centre of the vehicle look to your right hand side (passenger) in between the front grill and the rear panel where the bonnet locks ,if yo can imagine the passenger headlight and the centre of the motor and look in between the two sort of alongside the radiator and thats where you should see the cylinder type thingy condenser with pipes on it and the very top of this unit (about size of a coke can) is a small viewing glass a bit smaller than a 5 pence piece,i hope that makes sense and you can now locate the unit easily all the best

Aaaarrrgh Crying or Very sad

Willisa, you must have a digital camera Mad

I've just been out to the wagon to memorise the location of the sight glass and, zap Evil or Very Mad , you've posted the definitive response.

Still, at least Ratso'll have no probs now.

Thanks for the help people, I found the sight glass with no problems after the pictures and text description earlier although I did have to move some rather stubborn wiring out of the way to see it. I didn't have chance to check if it was full or not as it was a bit too dark really and I thought it best to do the check in proper daylight.

I Can't help being very impressed at the amount of help you all give to members and in such a short time span as well. It makes owning an imported vehicle so much easier when you have this kind of community behind it to help you out.

Thanks again
