Regarding rights of way in scotland.
i have looked into this before, the law is a strange one up there, there are no trespass laws as such. the way the guys up there do things is by contacting landowners for permission to drive across their land wherever there is a current track (which are not mapped as they are not public rights of way, but all on private land)

TBH the best way is to join a local 4x4 club or get in touch with your local 4x4 response group www.cotag.net  the guys on there should be able to give you some more accurate information.
