having a bit of a fiasco with my engine. Long story, which i'll recount in another thread.

I've bought a new cylinder head sold with "flush" valves, but on arrival the valves stick out slightly from the head by about 1-2mm. Does this make them protruding or is that acceptable?

I read that someone on the Pajero site said if the pistons have a "clover leaf" pattern on them then it's a protruding valve head. Mine DOES have the clover leaf pattern on the head, but the head i removed had flush valves. This has confused me, as although i can contact the seller of the new head to say he's sent me a protruding head when i ordered flush, i'm not even sure now which one i need and my existing head is the wrong one for the pistons!

images are of the new head, the one i removed from the engine, and my engine block showing pattern on top of the pistons...

I presume the piston crown doesn't go higher than the metal of the block?  How thick is the gasket?

it does seem to, but the gasket is fairly thick. The old head was completely flush so the piston won't go higher than the top of the gasket i assume??

sorted now. Turns out they had sent me the wrong head. My new valves look just the same as the old ones in those photos.

head is back on and i've put 2000ks on the clock so i think it's a success. Don't think i posted at the time, but my rocker shaft snapped in two on the M6 just before christmas. Looked originally like two of the bolts securing a cap in the head were loose, but as the head came off it became a little clearer. The bearings on the camshaft were pretty much non-existent and it had worn into the aluminium of the head. looks like the shaft was rotation in an oval shape, which probably led to extra vibration snapping the rocker shaft. Was a bit of a godsend in the end, as my head gasket was in a bad way too, and i got plenty of other bits done. Fancied investing the cash and seemed like a good idea to do the extras...

brand new complete cyl head fitted
new head & manifold gasket
new egr and turbo gaskets
intake & egr pipes blasted
new water pump & thermostat
radiator re-manufactured (new core/matrix)
new belts & tensioners
front crank seal replaced
sump removed - bits of old head removed! sump re-sealed
oil pressure gauge fitted
new oil pressure switch
new fluids

Incidentally It seems i STILL have an oil leak, which i'm assuming is the rear crank seal. No biggie really, i'm not losing much oil. I really want to completely change my AT fluid soon, so might whip the g/box off and do that with the seal. I wish i'd come to this conclusion before i put the head back on as i might have gone the whole way and looked at the bottom end of the engine too!

So all up i've spent about £500 but i've done a lot, and i'm happier with the engine - it sounds so sweet now. This is L300 #3 for me and i never knew the 4D56 could be so quiet! Shame i only had this one 2 weeks before my rocker shaft snapped!
