Thats scandolous, i was looking at the position on my Deli on the weekend and it doesn't look to bad compared to peugeot engines iv worked on in the past, in fact i reckon if u were only fitting the chain without new tensioners you could get away with only taking some of the cover up and then manually crank her over to get the chain to wrap around. Would suggest the tensioners should be replaced anyway though as this is the most common cause of any timing chain failure, not the actually chain breaking. I reckon for a diesel specialist or any decent mechanic it would only be around a 6 hour job max. Unless there are any stupid things in the way that imm not awhere of. Most i wud pay at a garage for a job like that would be 400 quids....I think my local mechanic would probably do it for me at mates rates for about 200-250. heck 1200 + vat their having a laugh, u cud prob by a recon engine for that.

Yeh I thought they were havin a larf aswell!! Said it would take about 12 hrs labour. £212 + VAT for the chain. Works out to be around £80 per hour labour, wouldn't you just lurrvv a job that pays those rates!!!?? and before amyone says it I know the mechanic would get no where near that hourly rate!!

you have to remove the cylider head to replace the chain guides, puts a bit of extra time on it, i recon about a 10 hour job, priced chain and things up not too long ago.
chain £128.89
tensioner £76.02
liquid gasket £53.79
just for starters, then 10 hrs labour at around £55hr. soon adds up, and thats not including £100 or so for head gasket set plus oils and coolant, and guides on top of that Shocked Shocked

The most annoying thing is that the garages charge all this money and mark everything up, charge by the hour and not the exact time it takes them and then turn around to the actual mechanic and pay him peanuts.
I'm going out to have a look at mine in a bit as i can move it at least 1mm on the cam gear with my finger, gonna have a play with the tensioner first.

Took it to a diesel specialist today. Turns out he owns a Pajero/Shogun so knows exactly how it should sound like. Reckons there's nothing wrong as when revved you would hear the chain if it was rattling and mine wasn't. (No steam train noises either), although there was a fair amount of black smoke from the exhaust when he revved it!! Also the tick over is smooth and regular. What he did recommend though was to change oil and filter every 10,000kms, fuel filter every 20,000kms and air filter at the recommended interval. He reckoned that any cr4p getting in any of those areas would definately not be good!!
I guess I must have been paranoid about the noises coming from the engine, the reason I suppose was because I don't really know how a diesel should sound having always had petrols before. Anyway my mind is now at rest............now do I re-open the EGR valve??????? That's for another day!

Timing chain was one of the things I asked my diesel fitter mate about before I bought the Deli. He has a 2.8 Paj with 210k miles on the clock (just phoned him) and says the chain is original, also says that if the oil is changed regularly the chain should last the life of the engine. :D

One caveat, if the chain lets go at 80mph it will have lasted the life of the engine Wink Wink Sad Sad

He estimated £4-500 for the job if he had to do it.
