Our 91 Delica is VERY smoky on start-up.

We had problems last year with the emissions test for MOT, but after about 5 attempts, lots of revving and a tin of "additive" we got our MOT. I worry because the place that MOT'd was the place i got the Delica from the year previous, but now that i am based in Worcs i will have to find a new MOT centre.

Is there anything that can be done to reduce the amount of smoke on start-up and improve the emissions?

Also, are there any Delica Specialists in or around Worcs?

Cheers

Lots of smoke on startup usually indicates that engine oil is running down the valves whilst its left for a while...

Imagine that the engine oil is being squirted and generally splashed about whilst the engine is running. When you stop the engine - a certain amount of this oil gets stuck in the cylinder head. It collects in the lowest point of the head - which is the valve guide area. If these guides are worn, or the rubber seals are perished or cracked then the oil drains into the cylinders - and when u start the vehicle - the oil collected in the cylinders burns off during the combustion cycle, producing blue smoke.

So, if it's usually only smoking during startup - have the valves and guides checked. But I will warn you - it's not cheap and if they are worn, you have to do all the valves and guides. Not just one or two.

I would suggest a diesel engine specialist - rather than the local spanner man !
