apologies if this is in the worng section, pleas e move if I'm in the wrong place (again  Embarassed )

just having a look at a sticky thread about milage of delis and major failures i had an idea

with all the information on this site and i don't know if I'm the only one who keeps service record of what i have changed at what milage but

we could start a reliability database, to have a guess at what milage certain items fail at so we could make our own kind of service schedule and life some of the parts we fit so we will know when they will fail again

only an idea but i may stop people being stuck at the side of he road one day,

obviously most of our motors are at the up scale end of the bath tub curve for reliablity so things will be wearing out

only a though, what do you all think?

Yes a reliability database is an excellent idea with a large 'GOT A PROBLEM? READ THIS FIRST'
I've had my Delica five years and it should be emphasise that they are very very reliable BUT the same problems do crop up, for instance,
1 The inter cooler box can rest on the upper water hose and wear a hole in the hose.
2 On starting one morning I heard a strange noise and eventually found the lower pulley was coming apart (an age related ten to twelve year thing?)
3 One day it went into 3rd gear and stuck, my Mitsi garage (usually very good) diagnosed a new £4000 gearbox, confirmed by another garage who noticed in passing a blown 20amp fuse. set me going, turns out to be the broken spring in the selector handle (new handle Ebay £90)
4 My next door neighbour bought same year as mine recently ran for a few minutes then stopped, garage did the usual stuff, injectors, fuel lines, etc,  I said 'injection pump seal'. cost £2 and took us four hours.

The point is its not so much the problem but diagnosing it quickly, fixing it, and getting back on the road.

no 100% what format to have it in as yet, worst case an excell spread sheetto do the cals or some other soft ware i may have, in put the info and then have a sticky with this sort of thing:

80 miles check:

anti roll bars bushes :pic of what to check for

brakes

or what ever, but we may have enough data on here to utalise as is?

best way i suppose is collate all data from the site then work into a manual after analizing it?

Been thinking about this.
Great idea.
Would it not be better to use the existing forum format?
All that would need to be done is:

Start with the basics
Oil and filter change for instance.
Take photographs and do a step by step guide just like what others have done before.
Lock the post and move it to a HOW TO forum.
Make sure the title is clear so it can be searched.

When any one does a job and takes photographs it can be added by Moderators.

The HOW TO forum could be members only.

Does that make sense?

hello mr stairs

well thats what should come out of the data, oil and filter we should have a lifeit  for say 4000 miles

its for the bits like the alternator, if say there are ten people that have all had the alternator pop at say around 90k miles, on the service list it would say check alternator for whatever at 87k miles or before

thing is how to get the data from everyone?

the problem will come when people fit aftermarket spares, i think this will only work for original equip  as it should all have the same life

i suppose the first thinng to do will be to find out which parts have failed on peoples motors so we can gain a start point

Sorry misunderstood intended use.
Problem is mileage.
Some still have Kmts.
Some don't note mileage when doing stuff. (like me)
Although if there was a database I would start to make a note of mileage.

I d know..
110,000 miles new cylinder head.
111,000 miles new radiator.

km should be no probs to convert  :D

your right though lots of people arnt as sad as me noting down milages  Laughing

although if people start noting them down from now ish with the people who have noted them down should be okay, won't be perfect but better than nothing  Wink

although, cyclinder head goin, for that sort of thing its best to find the root cause of it "going" if a head breaks it can be other things that have made it break, for myself I've had a head gasket fail due to a popped heater matrix (not on a Deli) so if i had checked it first i wouldn't have had to do my head gasket twice  Wink

oooh! just thought!

radiator at 110 miles (is the m or kms?)

that could be the first bit of info! why did it fail? pin hole in certain place? could be a 105k mile check is lots of other people have had the same?

Hmmm

I am struggling to think of an easyish way to do it.

However A Wiki for all the helpful stuff on this forum could be useful, that way things Can't get lost/culled.

This is a fantastic idea as i've only just got my Deli i have no idea what will happen and when to expect it so for me the info provided by experienced Deli user is invaluble. i'm up for helping to add to this info and will start recording the milage/km of any work/service done.

okay heres mine....bought at 45k miles

at 45300 (fill up diesel)

at 45500 fill up diesel

at 45700 fill up diesel

at 45950 fill up diesel

....
..

..

okay so you get the general idea

Although something to note at 64340 miles it was a case of filling up with half a tank of petrol (this is voluntary)

Does anyone have any .asp skills? That would be the best way to collect and display the data, although I guess it might cost extra to host. Failing that, web forms and a manual process, but that would be a major PITA for someone to keep on top of.

I have some .asp experience.  I am currently doing an OU course on Web Design and one of the modules was databases in web design using .asp  However, much as I would like to volounteer I do not have the tome at the moment due to my studies.  I would be willing to review the situation in May when the current module comes to an end.  In fact if anyone out there can tell me how to get 25-30mpg from my Delica I would certainly do it.

By the way I would do it using a database rather than a spreadsheet.

I try to drive at 60mph and sensibly.  Other that the fuel consumption I'm very happy with my Delica
