|
|
Hi guys. ... I've got an '89 L300 Star Wagon with manual steering and I want to retro fit powersteering. I'm assuming if I just buy all the right parts form the wreckers that they'll just bolt on, but I"m worried there might be some fundamental differences between the power and manual steering vans that will make this difficult?
Assuming it's achievable ....
Is it a difficult task?
Would I need special tools?
How much time is it likely to take?
Special tools required? |

You will need the whole steering rack as the powered one probably have different gear ratio (turns lock to lock). Other than that you should be fine - make sure your vehicle has the pulley to run the pump off the engine too and get any related pipe brackets too.
The fluid resevoir lives under access cover beneath the drivers seat.
Make sure all the pipe unions are done up tight - you may need new washers for them, it runs at quite high pressure.
Changed a Pug505 system once and it only took an afternoon.
To bleed the air out run the engine and turn lock to lock a few times then top up the fluid.
There really isn't much to it - rack, pump, resevoir, pipes, pulley and belt.
Good Luck!! _________________ The PINK PIG!

Thanks for the help. Assuming I can get the parts cheap enough I think I'll give it a go!
I didn't mention earlier that my Star Wagon is 4WD. Now I'm thinking that may make a differnce.... Is the power steering the same for both 2WD & 4WD models? I imagine things like the "gearing" of the rack may be different. I'm also wondering if I need to get it off a comparable year van .
So does anyone ill I need to get the parts off a 4WD van?
& were there any changes during the life cycle that would mean I need to get the parts from particular years or avoid particular years (my Van is an '89) |
