|
|
Just been using Multimap to find a better route by car from South Wales Caving Club headquarters in the Swansea Valley to one of our beginners caves in the next valley. Checked the box for "quickest" and it sent me by road over to Glyn Neath and back up the valley 15 miles approx 45 minutes . Tried shortest and guess what, it directed me straight through the forest on a marked ORPA 10 miles shorter and (allegedly) 8 minutes faster
Checked the co-ordinates against Wayfinder and there it is Lane SN8711-6a. Described as quite wet in some places but a lane worth doing. Good job I didn't use Multimap last year when I went to the cave in the company Astra!
Check it out - just search for a route from Abercrave to Ystradfellte on multimap.com and make sure you click the "Shortest" radio button. |

Nearly, it turns off Sarn Helen at right angles, just where SH continues from the metalled road. |

does it come out by Pont Melin-fach? if so you would of been okay in the astra, just wouldn't of been able to use the ford _________________ I may not be perfect but it scares me how close to it i am

when you get to the end of the tarmac, the road goes round to the right, but there is a gate on the left and thats sarn helen and that is a good lane but don't go down there on your own _________________ I may not be perfect but it scares me how close to it i am

I might be teaching you guys to suck eggs in your neck of the woods so to speak but on the subject of Sarn Helen there is a bypass route to get around the closed gate at the Betws y coed end. This has been approved by
Elwyn Williams
Peiriannydd Rhanbarthol/Divisional Engineer Gwasanaethau Priffyrdd a
Chludiant / Highways and Transportation Services Cyngor Bwrdeistref
Sirol CONWY County Borough Council Ffôn
This is the track
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=276985&y=356455&z=3&sv=276985,356455&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf
And the entry is approximately here
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=276210&y=357595&z=3&sv=276210,357595&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf
But nearer Betws y coed, To quote Elwyn "Yes that is the forestry access track, however its access off the A5 is
nearer Betws y Coed than the one marked on your map. On site it is
quite obvious, and signed Meas Newyddion." _________________

Went and had a look around there today. There's a bit of a discrepancy in the routes. If you follow the track that's most used, then yes you can get through in any vehicle. However, I tried using the GPS to follow the right of way as marked on the map and decided that, being on my own, discretion was the better course. Might go back when it's a bit drier or with a few more vehicles and people who know what they're doing! |

Sorry if this is OT but how do you go about finding greenlanes in your area? I've tried and tried and can find nothing in Lochaber or Argyll in Scotland. Maybe there is nothing but I'd have thought some of the many forestry roads would be usable or built on existing right of way routes. Can anyone help? |

Part of the problem you'll face is that rights of way aren't marked on OS maps in Scotland. Makes lanes much more difficult to find! |

Try going to the entry page rather than a specific county area:- http://vamp.idlers.org/~jaffa/map.htm
Though I think that site only lists Fords and Tidal roads.

Thanks for the info guys, that is a good start. I didn't realise that ROWs were excluded from OS maps in Scotland, I'll try to find maps that do show them, someone must produce them. |

You may find the information in this pdf of use for an insight into Rights of Way in Scotland:- http://www.snh.org.uk/pdfs/access/sr-sprow.pdf
This one will give you access to lots of other information and links:- http://www.scotways.com/[img]

8. Are there any rights of way where I can drive a vehicle?
There are very few rights of way for motorised vehicles in Scotland. The total number is 142, and these have an average length of less than 1 mile. They are mostly short stretches of roads that have not been adopted by the local authority. Using a vehicle off-road is an offence except where disabled people use motorised wheelchairs or buggies.
Eh? Surely that can't be right. |

Yep I'm afraid that's right. Unless its private land and you are or have permission from the land owner. you can't even drive across a path to park in your garden unless you have a dropped kerb and therefore right of access. |

I guess I'm just lucky then in finding offroad stretches longer than a mile or two!
Click on the pictures to view these video's
Here's five minutes of a thirty minute long track in Lowland Scotland:-
This is another five minutes from a sixty minute trip into some remote Highland hills.
