Hi, just spent 3-4 hours trying to fit the EGR plate. The directions on this site were superb, I actually got the old one out in 20 mins. Trouble was trying to line up the bolts again and getting the plate to stay in place, then nightmare, I dropped it and I just can't find it anywere. So back has gone the old one and guess what, the bolts lined up straight away. Sunday wasted. But not giving up, gonna order myself another plate but I would appreciate any input as to how you manage to get the holes to line up while keeping the plate in one place. It seems you need you be an octopus to put it all together.
Then when underneath trying to find the plate, I noticed a mad oil leak. Couldn't be bothered trying to find where it was coming from, too dark and wet!! Oh what joy. Beer time!!

Take it Easy.. as The Eagles would say Wink
Heard that story from many L300 owners. It's a lot easier on a L400 Laughing
Have you tried recovering it with one of those magnets on a stick? I read a post once here of where they tend to go :? You could try using a couple of nails or something to try and line 1 hole at a time Rolling Eyes

Best thing to do.........tie a piece of string on one of the spare holes on the plate and secure the other end to something. Then, if you drop it you can retrieve it straight away Smile

Both good ideas. Will give it a try when new one lands. I've got one of those magnets, and despite a lot of fishing about just couldn't find the plate. It's like a black hole in that engine!! Cheers!

had same trouble I undid it from the exhaust end underneath and loose fitted it then replaced it as i found it easier putting nuts on studs than getting bolt to start, also misfitted egr plate first time and got soot everywhere where exhaust gasses came out its a b.itch of a job and be careful not to get trim dirty climbing in and out a few dozen times.

I had the same problem!

See http://www.MDOCUK.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=864&highlight=egr

Best tip is using the bit of string, so when you drop it you don't lose it!

Second best tip is take out driver's seat and remove the section of engine cover under it, to improve access. Good for finding plate after dropping it!

Good luck!

Steve

PS I didn't notice any improvement after doing it!!!
