I am trialling this to see if it can work for The Club ... please stick with it ...
The MDOCUK continues to be free-to-join, with voluntary contributions and Lifetime Memberships helping to fund The Club, but I would like to step things up a gear AND keep The MDOCUK free to use.
This means, looking at opportunities to generate revenue in other ways.
The Google Ads look like a fair way to do this ... I've chosen options to keep them discreet, so they're not intrusive and, while there's a 'learning period' within google, the ads are 'context sensitive' and should only be 'Delica related'... this can take up to 48 hours to settle in.
Google assure me that there are no offensive advertisers supported in their program, so you won't see any violence / porn / gambling / drugs related links and nor should you see (after the settling-in period) anything that you really don't want - ie personal loan offers etc.
I'd like to give this a trial for one week and, if enough people generally have mis-givings, then it can be removed.
If you do vote, then please add a comment to this thread to say why you chose to vote the way you did.
ATB

I've voted thumbs up, provided Google ads ARE kept in context.
I've witnessed a couple of forums get progressively worse with google ads for finance companies every other post but others where google ads are restricted to one post per thread and easy to ignore (unless advert of interest, of course).
If it works for the club and keeps it "free" then it's a good thing. _________________ "we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist"

Thumbs up for me too as long as they're not too intrusive etc.
Tucked away in a corner somewhere, perhaps.
Give it a go and lets see. |

I also think it should be given a trial, if it helps the club then go for it. Regards Franklyn... _________________ Delica, if only I'd known sooner *******

... they're called Delica beads ... you can't win them all
As for ad placement ... I've seen forums where EVERY second post on EVERY thread is a Google Ad ... that won't be happening here ;)
Honestly ... if at the end of the trial, people think it's detrimental to the website, then I'll remove it ... I'll just have to push the Lifetime Memberships a bit harder ;)

Google ads are a good way of making a "little" cash from such a speciality site as this. I've run them for a few years on one of my sites and they make mabye 100 - 200 dollars a year. If you want best performance keep them as near the top of the page as possible, one of the 3 or 4 horizontal ad banners across the top of the page works quite well for this and isn't too intrusive, and get them on the front page of the site.
Your regular members will probably give you the least return, its fresh traffic you want to capitalize, however you run the risk of diverting new visitors away from the site then. Try to set googleads to open links in a new window. One strategy, again risking breaking googles rules is educating regular visitors to click on one ad every time they visit
I think I've heard of patches for phpbb that auto insert a post every x amount of posts with a predefined google ad but people tend to find them intrusive, plus if you end up with more than one ad placement per page you risk infringing googles rules.
If youre looking to reduce costs I'd be happy to offer free hosting for you on my server, its extremely high spec and virtually empty of sites, I got it to start a hosting biz and ended up putting those plans into hibernation, just couldn't bring myself to part with the luxury of my own web server for my sites, after learning the hard way about hosting companies many times I prefer to continue to cut out middlemen.
I think weve all encountered flamin Delica beads in our searches _________________ Interested in a good Super Exceed high top crystalite 7 seater with the works and a sorted fuel pump etc. doesn't need to be perfect PM me if you have any leads. |

if all we get is that one line on the top then it's thumbs up from me. :D
But if it goes the way of teletext where you can only read 2-3 lines and the rest is all adverts then it would change in to a thumbs down.
But as I don't add anything to the site other than words, I should not stop the site using google to help paying the bills. _________________ 94 Green over Grey SWB Exceed with Crystalite Roof |

Well I've got lifetime membership and if Google Ads helps keep costs down then its okay by me!
Mind you I also use Firefox as my browser, which has an add on that allows me to block adverts from showing on my screen, so I don't need to see them anyway.

Try it out simon - but one word of warning I moderate on another forum (not Deli related!) and although google say none of the ad content is offensive or unsuitable for minors we quite often get adverts for pornographic sites on our forum (it's a music festival forum btw in case you thought otherwise!) .I have contacted google about this but it still happens from time to time! |

I don't mind targetted ads. We don't have to click on them and if it helps keep the site running I'm all for it. Maybe we could have a "design a t-shirt" competition and then sell them on a shop. Delica CLUB tshirts. i don't think you have to get them all printed up first so there is no outlay at the beginning. It might be funny seeing what people come up with.
What about this for targeted advertising!
